At Google, we have consistently invested in providing helpful context for the information you encounter online. With the rise of high-fidelity generative media, we are now deploying advanced tools to help you easily determine whether the content you interact with was created or edited using AI. Starting today, we are making it simpler for everyone to verify if an image was generated or modified by Google AI directly within the Gemini app, leveraging our SynthID digital watermarking technology that embeds imperceptible signals into AI-generated content.

We first introduced SynthID in 2023, and since then, it has been used to watermark over 20 billion AI-generated pieces of content. We have also been testing the SynthID Detector, a verification portal, with journalists and media professionals to ensure its reliability and effectiveness.
To use this feature, simply upload an image to the Gemini app and ask questions like, “Was this created with Google AI?” or “Is this AI-generated?” Gemini will check for the SynthID watermark and apply its reasoning to provide you with contextual insights about the content’s origin.

Looking ahead, this initiative builds on our history of offering context about images in Google Search and exploring innovations like Backstory from Google DeepMind. We plan to expand SynthID verification to support additional formats, including video and audio, and bring these capabilities to more platforms such as Search.
In collaboration with industry partners, we are advancing content transparency and authenticity standards across our product ecosystem—including YouTube, Search, Pixel, and Photos—through our role on the steering committee of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). As part of this effort, images generated by Nano Banana Pro in the Gemini app, Vertex AI, and Google Ads will now include embedded C2PA metadata, offering greater transparency into their creation process. We aim to extend this capability to more products in the coming months.
Over time, we will also support C2PA content credentials, enabling you to verify the original source of content created by models and products outside Google’s ecosystem. This work is central to our commitment to bold and responsible AI, and we are excited to contribute to the future of AI transparency.
